Centennial Park in Altoona is an island of nature surrounded by cityscape on all sides. The singletrack “Creek’s Edge” lives up to its name, following Otter Creek for close to a mile before ducking under US 53 to access our newest trails addition. Test yourself on “Feel the Burn” with a long, sustained climb to the southern trailhead. While hiking or biking the blend of woodsy and streambank scenery, be on the lookout for whitetail deer, otters and beavers. There are a handful of hundred-plus-year-old white pine trees scattered throughout and a historic mill site along the southernmost trails. Walkers and riders can expect to find beginner-friendly trails with a few short sections that may offer some grin-worthy challenges. Snowshoeing is a fun way to explore the park in the winter and the candlelight hike is a local favorite. The trails are all multiuse and a popular dog walking destination, so watch for and be courteous to other users.
Parking is available at Altoona’s Centennial Park, 3125 Spooner Avenue, for the north and primary trailhead. Another parking lot is located near the intersection of San Juan Road and Gloede Drive. This southern parking area provides quick access to the trail sections in the old flour and woolen mill along the rushing, clear waters of Otter Creek.
