Pipestone Quarry Trails features rugged, challenging, old school single track in a unique, 1,500-acre section of Barron County forest. Besides their natural rocky character, the trails have several boardwalks and optional features, such as jumps, rock gardens and rock rides. First-timers to Pipestone are advised to start with the 45RPM and Hit Single trails before trying the more advanced trails.
Hiking and snowshoeing is welcome on all trails. Users should be aware of fall hunting seasons and exercise caution and courtesy when hunters are present.
The name is derived from from the pipestone quarried here for centuries by indigenous peoples. But the trails do not go directly to these quarries, as they are protected historic sites. In the most remote part of the forest is the Rock Creek Felsenmeer State Natural Area, one of only three known felsenmeers in Wisconsin. Translated from German, felsenmeer means “sea of rock.” The felsenmeer can be accessed from above on the Rock N’ Roll singletrack trail. It can be accessed from the bottom via double track trails. Some bushwhacking may be required to see the most expansive sections of the felsenmeer. The best time to view the felsenmeer is in the spring and fall when there is less leaf cover.
